Description

Bensedin (also known as Diazepam) is a medicine from the group of benzodiazepines. It acts primarly to releive anxiety and fears. It also relax muscles and acts as anticonvulsant (prevents seizures). Because of these effects, it is used to treat anxiety (fear, anxiety), muscle cramps (spasms) as well as for epileptic seizures treatment especially to treat condition know as “status epileptucus”. It can also be used for delirium tremens treatment and for preparing for surgery. This medicine is also used to treat insomnia.

Precautions:- It should not be used for more than 3 months, because prolonged use of Bensedin can lead to addiction! Do not suddenly stop taking this drug because if you do, you may have worsening of the symptoms (so called withdrawal syndrome):

• severe headache,
• agitation,
• confusion,
• irritability.

You should gradually reduce the dose of Diazepam. For example, if you have been taking Diazepam 10 mg, the next 5-7 days you should take 5 mg per day, then the next 5-7 days you should take 2.5 mg per day and then you can completely stop taking Diazepam. It cannot be used in patients allergic to Bensedin other  similar medicines:

• bromazepam,
• nitrazepam,
• lorazepam,
• alprazolam and others.

It should not be used in patients suffering from myasthenia gravis (severe muscle disorder) because Bensedin can worsen myasthenia gravis. Diazapam cannot be used in patients with liver disorders as in patients with trouble breathing. Do not take alcoholic beverages while using Diazepam, because alcohol can increase the effect of bensedin and cause serious side effects. It can cause anterograde amnesia (you will not remember the events while you were under the influence of Diazepam). To avoid this side effect, make sure you have at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. You should not drive an automobile or operate machinery while using Diazepam, because Bensedin can cause drowsiness and affect your ability to drive a vehicle!

Use during pregnancy and breast feeding:- According to the FDA, Bensedin belongs to the group D (FDA: Group D). This means that Bensedin is harmful to the fetus and should not be used during the pregnancy. Bensedin passes into breast milk and may harm your baby. It should not be used during breast-feeding.

Use and Dose :- The usual dose to treat muscle spasm is 2-15 mg, 2-3 times per day. The usual dose to treat anxiety is 2-10 mg, 2-3 times per day. The usual dose to treat epileptic seizure is 10 mg, 3-4 times a day. Dose should always be reduced in children and the elderly patients, because of stronger effect of Diazepam. Therapy should always be started with lower doses. The dose may be gradually increased until the desired effect is achieved. Bensedin exists in the form of tablets and injections. It can be mixed with normal saline (0.9% NaCl) and administered in the form of a slow intravenous infusion (for at least 4 hours). If you are using this medication to treat insomnia, you should take Bensedin  in the evening, an hour before bedtime. Bensedin  should not be used longer than 3 months because it can cause physical and psychological dependence (Bensedin addiction)!

Use with other medicines (Interactions):- Bensedin should not be used in combination with the following medicines:

• Other medications used for the depression and anxiety treatment such as:

o             sertraline,

o             paroxetine,

o             fluoxetine,

o             fluvoxamine,

o             citalopram and others.

• Hypnotics and sedatives.
• Narcotic analgesics such as:

o             morphine,

o             oxycodone,

o             hydrocodone,

o             tramadol and others.

• Medicines used to treat epilepsy such as:

o             carbamazepine,

o             phenytoin and others.

• Antibiotics such as:

o             erythromycin,

o             clarithromycin,

o             azithromycin,

o             rifampicin,

o             isoniazid.

• Medications used to treat HIV infection:

o             saquinavir,

o             nelfinavir,

o             efavirenz,

o             indinavir and others.

• Medicines used to treat fungal infections:

o             itraconazole,

o             ketoconazole and others.

• Omeprazole, used to treat heartburn and gastric ulcer.
• Oral contraceptives.
• Levodopa, used for Parkinson’s disease treatment.
• Digoxin, used to treat heart failure.
• Medicines used to treat heart disroders:

o             diltiazem,

o             amiodarone and others.

Tell your doctor about all medications and herbal medicines you are taking.

Bensedin side effects:- Bensedin can cause the following side effects:

1. anterograde amnesia (loss of memory while you were under the influence of Diazepam),
2. headache,
3. insomnia,
4. agitation,
5. anger,
6. aggression,
7. impotence,
8. gynecomastia (breast enlargement),
9. blurred vision,
10. drowsiness,
11. fatigue,
12. nausea,
13. vomiting,
14. constipation,
15. ataxia (presence of abnormal movements),
16. diplopia (double vision),
17. speech disorder,
18. nightmares,
19. low blood pressure,
20. allergy and others.
